Yup, exactly. "There was a 1% national accident rate before autopilot but now it is 0.5%, aren't things great?" Not really, because my personal accident risk just went up from 0.1% to 0.5%.


But you have no issues with paying for social insurance when you never use it yourself? Isn't this the same kind of tradeoff?


How is it the same tradeoff? I'm not increasing my chances of getting sick by buying insurance. The worst case is that I won't use it, which is fine. The worst case for autopilot is that I'll get into a crash because the camera couldn't see a massive truck in front of me because of glare and shoddy software.
