If there is just one high-performance employee remaining who can out-perform what others are doing (without having to use AI), they need to be pushed out because it could make everybody else look bad by comparison.

The most common way to do that is to make the high-performer look bad now, before people catch on.

A well-worn strategy to achieve the resulting mediocrity when enforced from the top.
